Wine Director Daniel Johnnes of The Dinex Group - Biography

New York, NY

July 2012

Daniel Johnnes is the wine director for Daniel Boulud's Dinex Group, with all the prestige—and responsibility—that title endows. But Johnnes, who joined Boulud after spending 20 years as the wine director for Montrachet and the Myriad restaurant group, can handle the challenge. He currently oversees Restaurant Daniel, DB Bistro Moderne, DBGB, Café Boulud, Bar Boulud, and Boulud Sud.

Indeed, he’s thriving as a wine authority. Johnnes is a prodigious author, importer, and organizer of fine-wine dinners and tastings. His La Paulée Burgundy celebration in New York and San Francisco has received rave reviews by the press and public alike, with the Financial Times calling it “the greatest bacchanalia on the face of the earth.” In addition to enjoying great wine and superb food prepared by our nation's finest chefs, the celebrants have pledged over $1 million for charity.

Johnnes’s accolades are substantial: in 1994 he brought the highly coveted “Grand Award” from the Wine Spectator to restaurant Montrachet and was named the “Wine and Spirits Professional of the Year” by Santé in 2000. He was honored as the nation's top sommelier by the James Beard Foundation twice—with the honor of “Outstanding Wine Service” in May 1995 and “Outstanding Wine and Spirits Professional of the Year” in 2006. Robert M. Parker Jr. has described Johnnes as “our nation's finest (and nicest) sommelier.” Proving the point, in November 2001, Johnnes organized a benefit dinner with Parker Jr. to assist families of those in the restaurant industry lost in the World Trade Center disaster.
